Meeting Matsumoto

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival was an inspiring experience on so many levels. So much that I've had trouble even knowing how to write about any of it, but here's a moment I have to share.

The day after the festival I got to explore Toronto with a great group of comics friends and we magically ended up meeting one of my favorite cartoonists, Taiyo Matsumoto in front of the Japan Foundation where he had a beautiful show of his originals. Robin McConnell of the Inkstuds radio show took these photos of me giving Matsumoto a copy of my zine, 'Relax, We Have Alien Vehicles'. That's Jen Vaughn of Fantagraphics standing behind me, after having just encouraged me to talk to him. It was probably the nerdiest Fan Moment I've ever had, and it felt awesome.

Two new Art Zines!

I wasn't sure if I'd pull this off, but I'm going to be debuting two new art zines at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival alongside my comic, Capacity Number Eight. Logic Storm is a stream of conscious notebook of drawings I kept while building up to work on The Understanding Monster, book one in 2011. Relax, We Have Alien Vehicles is a stream of conscious notebook I started right after finishing Capacity Number Eight and completed last month. They're both 32 pages and will be up on my etsy shop when I get back next week.

New Anthology!

The one page collaborative comic I made with my friend, Craig Thompson has seen print in this awesome looking 48 page anthology put out by Alternative Comics. It's great to see them publishing again, and I'm excited to be a part of it in some small way, alongside some really great cartoonists. It's debuting at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend, so I'll be able to sign anyone's copy who wants me to.

Laughing Ghost Animal shirt!

I just got this new shirt made and I'm really excited about them! I'll have some for sale this weekend at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. I'll be at table 108 with my publisher, Secret Acres. When I get home, I should have some available on my Etsy shop.

Infinite Corpse collaborative comic

I contributed to a huge collaborative comics project that can finally be seen online here. There's over 200 artists involved so far and it's still growing. It's a choose your own adventure Exquisite Corpse style comic where each artist adds three panels to a huge sprawling narrative. If you read it a certain way, you'll find the other two panels I drew in there somewhere.

They exist!

It feels great to have my little wood shop fully operational in my garage now. I've been cutting new woodcut characters every weekend, then carrying them around with me in my backpack and drawing on them wherever I go. I'm going to try to fill an entire wall of my studio with them before July. then they'll all travel to LA with me.

Laughing monster woodcut in the sunlight

I've been working on new woodcut pieces for my solo show at Giant Robot that opens in late July. My plan is to make it my biggest and best show I've ever done.

Ishi's Brain

It was a real pleasure getting to host Eamon Espey and Lisa Krause when they came through Missoula with their hand made puppet show performance of Ishi's Brain. Watching their show was like having a waking dream. They're still on tour across America, check out their tour dates here. I highly recommend catching them if they're heading anywhere near you. Two amazing people doing inspirational, haunting work. It's the real deal.

Random

I keep a couple of pieces of hardboard in my backpack to keep my drawings safe and sometimes random things end up happening on them.

Zootown Arts Community Center

I made this little piece for the Zootown Arts Community Center's first annual Mini Benefit auction that opens tomorrow night. I'm excited I'll get to go to this. Mini cocktails, mini plates of food, and music, all for an awesome place that provides so many great things to Missoula's art community.

words on my insides

The official write-up on the Lind Ward Prize books can be read here. It's always strange and interesting to hear people describe this book. It was such a personal process for me, I was actually kind of terrified to let anyone read it at first. There's a copies available over at my etsy shop if anyone wants one. I always sign them with a small original drawing.

Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize Honor book!

I found out today that The Understanding Monster, book one has been named a Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize Honor book alongside Lilli Carre's excellent "Heads or Tales". The big prize went to Chris Ware for his complex and multi layered publication, Building Stories.  It's a really nice bit of encouragement as I work to finish book two!

It also feels like a huge honor to be awarded something named after Lynd Ward, who made beautiful silent novels with wood cut prints back in the depression era. The God Father of the Graphic Novel. I get to receive a box set collection of his six novels in woodcuts! As an avid book collector, I'm completely thrilled!

fields and eagle's nests

Griffin's been wanting to walk non-stop, so I've been taking him to big open places where he can wander to his heart's content. The other day we walked across a baseball field and watched an eagle building a nest.

Sudden Cosmic Experience

My new Art Zine that I only work on right before bed has been coming along. It's going to be a companion publication to Capacity Number Eight and both of them will debut at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival on May 11th and 12th. I'm excited that I get to go to the Toronto festival. It's suppose to be one of the best around!

Magic Fish

I've got a big Magic Fish woodcut for sale over at my Etsy Shop. It's one of the biggest woodcuts I've made so far. It's been living on the wall of my studio, watching me draw, but I think it might want to get out and meet new people.
