Laughing monster woodcut in the sunlight

I've been working on new woodcut pieces for my solo show at Giant Robot that opens in late July. My plan is to make it my biggest and best show I've ever done.

Ishi's Brain

It was a real pleasure getting to host Eamon Espey and Lisa Krause when they came through Missoula with their hand made puppet show performance of Ishi's Brain. Watching their show was like having a waking dream. They're still on tour across America, check out their tour dates here. I highly recommend catching them if they're heading anywhere near you. Two amazing people doing inspirational, haunting work. It's the real deal.

Random

I keep a couple of pieces of hardboard in my backpack to keep my drawings safe and sometimes random things end up happening on them.

Zootown Arts Community Center

I made this little piece for the Zootown Arts Community Center's first annual Mini Benefit auction that opens tomorrow night. I'm excited I'll get to go to this. Mini cocktails, mini plates of food, and music, all for an awesome place that provides so many great things to Missoula's art community.

words on my insides

The official write-up on the Lind Ward Prize books can be read here. It's always strange and interesting to hear people describe this book. It was such a personal process for me, I was actually kind of terrified to let anyone read it at first. There's a copies available over at my etsy shop if anyone wants one. I always sign them with a small original drawing.

Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize Honor book!

I found out today that The Understanding Monster, book one has been named a Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize Honor book alongside Lilli Carre's excellent "Heads or Tales". The big prize went to Chris Ware for his complex and multi layered publication, Building Stories.  It's a really nice bit of encouragement as I work to finish book two!

It also feels like a huge honor to be awarded something named after Lynd Ward, who made beautiful silent novels with wood cut prints back in the depression era. The God Father of the Graphic Novel. I get to receive a box set collection of his six novels in woodcuts! As an avid book collector, I'm completely thrilled!

From and unfinished comics page.

fields and eagle's nests

Griffin's been wanting to walk non-stop, so I've been taking him to big open places where he can wander to his heart's content. The other day we walked across a baseball field and watched an eagle building a nest.

Sudden Cosmic Experience

My new Art Zine that I only work on right before bed has been coming along. It's going to be a companion publication to Capacity Number Eight and both of them will debut at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival on May 11th and 12th. I'm excited that I get to go to the Toronto festival. It's suppose to be one of the best around!

Pony Club group show!

I made this little piece for the group show called "Search Results" that's opening this Thursday at the Pony Club gallery in Portland, Oregon. There's an amazing group of artists involved. I can't wait to see it all online.
