Crayon sessions

Griffin and I have been getting crazy on some crayon drawings together. We both color on the same page at the same time and get really loud. Sometimes I have to stop him from eating the crayons.

Barong mask

I drew a border around this photo of a Barong Mask from Bali a couple of years ago and mounted it on wood. It hangs in my studio. It's good to have things that feel like encouraging power objects hanging on the walls while I work.

GridLords anthology release!

 Hey! Tonight, if you're in Portland, this is definitely what I'd be going to tonight. GridLords has been hosting monthly comics readings and performances for awhile now, as well as posting some really great interviews with cartoonists. Now they're releasing their first publication! I'm Not Afraid To Love is a romance themed comics anthology with an exciting list of contributors. Below is a panel from my three page story I did for it. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.

More work on The Understanding Monster, book two. It's probably the most fun I've had working on a comic. I feel incredibly lucky that I get to go off to my studio and document these imaginary events.

As I was leaving the studio today, I stopped to look through a stack of unfinished drawings from under my drawing table and snapped this photo. I have piles of drawings I've never really shown anyone. I'll have to start taking more photos like this.

Year of the Snake

That piece I made for the Year of the Snake show at Giant Robot gallery is up for sale on their web store here. It's a really long drawing on a curved piece of wood. The whole show is worth checking out. There's some excellent work!

I've been working on a new art zine a few times a week, usually right before bed.  I'm not sure when it'll be done, but there's 11 pages so far.  It's about Mind-Technology from the future, a subject I'm passionate about.

This is a little sketchbook study I did of Fantastic Four number 13, page 21, panel 1, drawn by Jack Kirby and inked by Steve Ditko in the early 60s. Words by Stan Lee. I love all of Jack Kirby's work, and this was just a little way to get to know him better.

Heart Shaped Brain

Here's a little piece I made for the "Love me, love me not" show at the Von Common here in Missoula. The Show reception is from 6-10 on Friday the 1st. It will be an evening of readings, performances, art, and fermented liquids. Should be a fun time!

The Snake Train Spirits

 This is a long piece I just made on a curving piece of wood for the annual Chinese NewYears group show at Giant Robot Gallery that opens on the evening of February 2nd in Los Angeles. Bring on the year of the Snake!

inspiration collection

I recently decided to turn my tumblr site into a space where I collect art and imagery that feel personally important to me. I've always wanted to be better at documenting the things that keep me inspired and excited, and this feels like a good way to do it. This is a Kwakiutl Bear dancer photographed in 1914 by Edward Curtis in British Columbia.

I had a little down time this afternoon, so I decided to start an Art Zine. I haven't self-published anything in a few years, and I'm excited to get back into it. I'm also slowly working on a number of new woodcuts, which should make their way to my Etsy shop soon.

Anasazi study

Years back I was hiking in Southern Utah and saw this painting left by the Anasazi indians up on the cliffs in the distance. I decided to climb up to them and get a closer look. The figures turned out to be as tall as me. This is one of the photographs I took that day. I recently drew directly on top of a color copy of it as a way to study the shapes. Sometimes drawing feels like it's an extension of my sense of touch. Drawing on top of images I want to get to know better helps me find a way inside, so I can understand it in my own way. This drawing is pinned up in my studio.

Capacity number eight!

Here's my last day of the year surprise: Secret Acres will be publishing Capacity number 8 this spring! I had thought I was finished with the Capacity series, but then suddenly I wasn't.

collaborative drawing

This is a collaborative drawing I did with Luke Ramsey a few years ago. We've only ever gotten to hang out one time, and this is what happened. I was happy to find this colored version of it online recently. Feels like a nice documentation of a great day.

Signatures

I just signed a bunch of copies of Capacity that people ordered from my Etsy shop. I always draw a little character in the corner of the title page. It keeps things fun. They'll be shipped off in the morning. I'm thankful for all the supportI've ben getting! It keeps me going. Everything I do is for the mission, the mission is everything.
