Some people I know

These are a few little panels from The Understanding Monster Book One. It looks like it's finally off to the printers now! If all goes well, it will be out in time to be released at the Small Press Expo (SPX) in late September!

  1. One thing I notice about your characters is that I appreciate them far more when I see them in the context of the comic than cut out of it like this. Snipped out of their native environment, they have the feel of animals in cages, at odds with the world around them. Or... you know, like those little tablets they have along certain nature routs, "this is an elm tree", "this is a deer", like pinned butterflies.

That said, just from this very brief glimpse I quite love "the-floor-is-water-to-me", and I'm intrigued about what's inside the micro-palace of information.

Now, a question... how many pages is this first book, and how long will the entire project be?

  2. Caged animals and pinned butterflies is definitely not at all what I was going for when I drew those characters, but it's always interesting to hear what associations gets triggered in someone else's mind. Thanks for looking. "The-Floor-is-Water-to-me" says hi!

  3. It's just posting them in a blog entry that does it for me - I'm sure that when I read the book and see them in their native environment, I'll be able to understand them a lot better.

But surely you can also see the analogy between posting characters in a blog post without any context with zoos and pinned butterflies?
