cat on drawing table

I use to try to keep my drawing table off limits to my cat, Mortimer. But I finally gave in when I realized how much he likes to hang out as close to my drawings as possible and simply watch what I'm doing. He's great company. Mortimer has probably hung out on top of nearly every one of my drawings at some point or another.
This is one of the first panels to my new comic. This mouse is very brave. Here's the panel that comes directly after that first one. It's all mostly top secret right now, but I'll be showing more bits and pieces as I go.

  2. Haha, fun that the cat helps disguise the drawings. Looks cool by the way. Cats are great artist company for sure!

  5. I love these Cat + Art photos! Looks like Mortimer is quite the poser! The one with the mouse drawing is adorable :-)
I am seeing all these blog posts about your students from Journalfest, and how GREAT their experience was...now I wish I would have gotten a chance to take a class with you too! Maybe next year!

    Say HI to Mortimer...

  6. Ah, can anyone resist a ginger feline when they want to leap up on the table? The one with the mouse is perfect.

  7. Personally, I'm very glad you decided to let him sit in on the production process (or is that sit on the production process?). It looks like he enjoys helping..

  8. Mortimer is just giving his opinion. He really likes the mouse illustration. I've trained my cats to keep off my work table and desk, just because they might know over something and track it all over the house.

  9. How long does it usually take you to finish one page? They are all so very detailed, some of which include color, and I'm just curious as to how much time and energy is put into them.

  10. Thanks everyone, Mortimer loves all the attention!

To answer your question, Tuesday, I'm never actually sure how long any of my pictures take! I'm always working on a number of things at once and time just kind of melts aways for me. I put a lot of effort and time into every piece though. I switch back and forth between pieces as they call to me. Sometimes I'll have layers of pictures on my drawing table, about 3 or 4 deep and I'll alternate between them all day. The fist page of my new comic took a whole week to draw, but then I was able to nearly finish 3 pages in a single day the other night. But the amount of time a single peice takes never feels as important to me as the experience of creating it, so I try to just let each piece take it's natural course. Whenever I try to force it, it starts getting stressful and less fun. This can be really challenging for me when their's a deadline involved!
